AM I the only one that jumped for joy when I saw the sign go up to say there would be approximately 12 weeks of road works in Salisbury Road?

I had visions of loads of men, temporary traffic lights, cones and barriers. I expected the hedge on the garden centre side to be cut back (my wing mirror has been a target of that hedge for a while now); the hedge on the other side taken out to allow a wider footpath and cycleway; the grass cut to ground level (there is a kerb along the road somewhere); and finally, the road planed-up and re-laid to a good standard we deserve!

But, oh dear. I read in the Advertiser that we are to get two crossing points and this is to take 12 weeks (Advertiser June 8, Roadwork scheme).

This is said to be to improve safety. Who would put a crossing point next to a busy roundabout with no speed limit? There are often accidents there (the sign post and bent light standard are there for all to see).

While talking of safety, I have every admiration for those whose hobbies are running and cycling, but why do cyclists nearly all wear black outfits, stand up and sway from side to side when going up an incline and riding close together so you can’t overtake them? Why do runners insist on running on roads with no pavements, often on the wrong side?

Well. I have had my moan and perhaps the highways department can explain why the hedges and grass is being allowed to grow out of control, not only in Salisbury Road, but in many areas of the town.
