I AM sure that he’s able to do this himself, but I would like to defend Keith Watts.

He has been slated by local Brexiters (various letters June 22 and 29) due to his letter (June 15, ‘People should have a say’), where he raised the prospect of food shortages should the UK leave the EU without a deal.

All Mr Watts was doing was repeating claims made by the Tory Brexit government itself. The government wrote three scenario reports, and what he quoted wasn’t even the worst ‘Armageddon’ scenario. The government denied the reports, but also refused to release the reports for scrutiny. This doesn’t sound good to me, but I’ll leave you to decide.

Should food shortages occur, it will be due to border checks by the EU after the UK has left. The Dover Port Authorities have stated that any delays at the port will cause long queues of lorries trying to cross the channel causing delays in food and factory part deliveries.

Unless the UK government makes massive compromises to the EU, the UK will be leaving the EU without a deal.

The UK will be under World Trade Organisation conditions, which again, according to the government, is the worst economic option for the UK.

The list of companies and banks potentially transferring operations out of the UK to the EU grows by the day.

Again, according to the government, Brexit has slowed UK economic growth so far by £15billion a year. There is no NHS dividend. The border with Ireland ... Where do I start?

Surely you Brexiters must know this is all going badly wrong? Arch-Brexiter Jacob Rees-Mogg does, as he’s transferring his business undertakings to Dublin. You told yourselves that with the EU, we could still have access to the facilities, and have them for nothing. Try doing that with any club you’re in. I’m sure you would be told “no” and I’m sure the word “off” would be there somewhere.

Much to many Brexiters’ disgust, I think some in government realise this, with the PM’s soon to be released White Paper, but whether it’s enough to get a deal, I guess time will tell.
