I FELT obliged to reply via your column to the ‘staggeringly absurd’ reference from Jennifer Godschall Johnson (Advertiser Letters, July 20, ‘People’s vote’).

Leading Brexiteers like Tim Martin of Wetherspoons, Mr Dyson and Mr Bamford are self-made men, millionaires maybe, but not about to jump ship. Many Remainers, however, are of the ‘snout in the trough’ variety, worried that the cushy EU jobs available to them when they have messed up whichever organisations they have headed, will disappear.

So good old Tony Blair, Heseltine, Clarke, etc, are, I suppose, struggling to make ends meet! Money withheld from that endless, unaccountable money pit should be used to provide investment in the supposed vulnerable kingdoms.

As one Welsh lady remarked, “We don’t want fancy adornments with ‘Funded by the EU’, emblazoned on them but investment in industry and infrastructure.

A majority of people voted to leave the EU, a majority of people, believe it or not, who were aware of the principal points, ie national independence, controlled immigration from anywhere and a cessation of diktats from an unelected body. The UK is a top trading nation especially in finance and technology and the scaremongering regarding jobs, services, the NHS, etc is exactly that — scaremongering.

What is needed is confident and realistic negotiations with the EU which will result in an amiable exit without compromising any of the principals the majority voted for.

Finally, civil servants and politicians are servants of the people, especially in the latter case, and should carry out the wishes of the people.
