Council prepared to help when needed

I REFER to your article on page 3 of last Friday’s issue. I gave the reporter a copy of my statement to the council on 14 January which clearly states that Twinings will employ 460 people. How can he get that so wrong?

The article is very negative so far as the council's stance with regard to the proposed job losses. It ignores the fact that the meeting with Twinings directors included persons from SEEDA, Job Centre Plus, Business Link and the Andover college with the sole purpose of providing maximum assistance to those whose jobs are at risk.

As soon as Twinings have completed their consultations we will move in with all these agencies to provide the help needed.

In addition to this we will also give expert advice and a start-up grant to anyone wishing to start their own business as we did with the Ducal workers when they were faced with a similar situation.

The council is being realistic and is getting involved to provide positive help which is likely to be far more effective than banner waving and public demonstrations.

Cllr Peter Giddings, Economic Portfolio Holder, TVBC.
