Andover Museum has got a fascinating exhibition on display at the moment.

It is ‘The 1970s - The Decade That Time Forgot?’ which will run until the beginning of April.

For those whose tender years deny them the memories of the ’70s it was a decade that took the infancy of the new liberation of the 1960s into spotty pubescence.

Often referred to as the decade taste forgot, it’s true that fashions explored unknown territories, with glam rock setting the trends for ostentatious and garish clothes coupled to footwear that would have struck terror into the heart of today’s health and safety disciplinarians as well as their fashion counterparts.

But it was not all drugs, drink and silly clothes, although a fair bit of that exists today albeit it a different guise.

It was a time when music was pushing back the boundaries, and there was a much broader sense of fun than we seem to experience nowadays.

Sure, we have some great comedians but life has lost some its fizz, with everyone feeeling the pressures of a faster pace of life and greater material demands, not to mention a deep recession that has dragged on for far too long.

Forty years ago, as the new decade dawned, there was still an element of respect for others.

It is one of the tragedies of the past 40 years that manners no longer seem to count for anything and foul language has become the norm on TV and in the High Street.

Using offensive language and is still a crime as far as I am aware but it’s another example of what was once taboo becoming grudgingly accepted.

We can’t and shouldn’t live in the past, but we should certainly be striving to make the future decades ones that can be remembered with some pride.
