A great event for young musicians
12:50pm Thursday 14th March 2013 in Letters
BACK in February all your readers will be aware of the Andover Young Musician of the Year that you very kindly advertised for us and made sure over 200 people attended at St Mary’s Church to enjoy a wonderful evening of talent from four of our seven Senior Schools, and also raised over £1,200 for the church appeal after the lead was stolen, causing the need for some £100,000 to be raised to repair the church.
I would like to take the opportunity, through your paper, to thank Petty Wood, Chapel PR and other people who gave us donations towards the event.
The evening consisted of 15 acts in both classical and popular music categories, and it was brilliant to see Rookwood, Test Valley and Winton fielding the winners and runners up.
It was a great pleasure to be able to give the winners £100 each, kindly donated by Stannah and we hope much of this will go towards their music.
On top of this, the family of Sir Hubert Dawkes, a renowned musician who came from Andover and played all over the world, presented a magnificent cup to the individual who, in the view of the judges, showed the most potential.
This also happened to be the pianist who won the classical section of the competition.
So thank you Andover Advertiser for urging so many people to be there; thank you to all our sponsors, judges, helpers and all of you who donated.
Finally, we extend our thanks to Steve Randall of the Breeze who compered the event beautifully.
The event will be back next year.
