Past view of moving memorial

AS the Andover war memorial as a local issue has clearly raised its head again, I thought it might be helpful to recap.
Back in 2010 there was a strong and concerted high-profile campaign to have it moved back from its current location into the High Street. This was supported by a petition.
Test Valley was thus prompted to revisit the matter, which culminated in a debate and a decision in March 2011. Prior to that on February 4 the town council held an open public meeting in the Guildhall. Some 80 local residents attended.
The minutes from this public meeting can all be found on the TVBC website if you search for the Cabinet meeting on 16 March 2011.
Every member of the Cabinet spoke in the debate and they all decided to leave the memorial where it is currently in St Mary’s Churchyard. It was clearly a collective decision.
My view is that it is probably best left where it is. However I am supportive of a memorial in the High Street and opening up the views at the Top of Town so that the war memorial has much greater visibility.
