'Farms' not right name for these sites

First published in Letters

IN the 11 July issue of the Advertiser, you published a letter from Cllr Tom Thacker in which he presented a strong case for objecting to the Bullington Cross wind farm.

The following week’s issue ran two articles about two separate solar farms.

Even though I agree with the objectors in all three cases, I have no objection to the principles of generating energy from most of the sources available to us.

But I do feel uncomfortable with the terminology used.

It can be argued that people’s attitudes may be shaped by language.

If so, the use of the word ‘farm’ in relation to proposals of these kinds is disingenuous and misleading.

These developments are not farms; they bear no relation to agriculture.

On the contrary, they are power stations, which are industrial processes.
