REGARDING the recent “75 years ago today” feature, I well remember the farthing collection.
Mr Flemming would walk on the stage and shout ‘good morning boys and girls’ and we would all shout back ‘good morning chief’. We then sang the club song
“Every Saturday morning, where do we go, getting into mischief Oh dear no. To the Mickey Mouse club. With our badges on. Every Saturday morning. At the Odeon”
It seems strange that 768 farthings equated to 192 old pennies – considerably less than a pound. And to think that the mayor presented a cheque for that amount. How times have changed.
