WHEN I am not catching buses in the local area, I walk and usually enjoy the experience.

However several things have come to notice and I would like to share some with you.

1) The amount of litter along our road verges, bridle paths and hedgerows seems to have increased with the advent of ‘drive-thrus’ and takeaways.

2) The way drivers behave with pedestrians approaching on their side of the road (ie the correct side). Some swing out far onto the other side, some barely move, just missing, staring straight ahead. Few, signal and manoeuvre correctly. Those that do get a ‘thank you’ wave. The situation at night is worsened.

3) Cyclists who have no concern for pedestrians using footpaths along such as Weyhill Road (not yet a cycle track). I have been narrowly missed by unannounced cyclists racing by from behind, apart from the danger to myself, they could be knocked into the path of a truck. I have also warned other pedestrians about speedily approaching cyclists, in the nick of time.

4) The fact that our road edges are full of potholes and badly patched ones.

5) Our local landmarks and ancient sites are poorly marked, some not at all. Especially for me, Weyhill (sheep weighing), the Harroway (not road) which was part of the longest Roman road in Britain and after a sheep drove.

The parts that still exist locally are bisected by roads and factories. I feel that these should have a plaque to inform walkers of the historic paths they tread. It could be situated at the top of Harroway Road with map showing extent of surviving portions and links to other sites and places of related interest, such as the Sheep Fair.
