I DON’T think Judy Fowler should worry about her future entertainment (St Oodley retiring, last week’s letters).

A – if past history is anything to go by, I doubt the venerable St O will be able to resist.

It’s a bit like dieting or eavesdropping.

The temptation to dip in where one shouldn’t becomes too great.

Giving up anything quite often takes several attempts to succeed, and if memory serves correctly, St O promised same a couple of years ago, but like a true recidivist, was soon back putting pen to paper.

I wish him greater and lasting success this time around.

And B – there is a skilled apprentice waiting in the wings – Manuela.

What I will miss though, as Judy points out, is the mangling of the English language.

In this St O was second to none, and if Manuela is to fully succeed to the crown, she will need to change her approach. At the moment she writes coherently.

Or perhaps we are expecting too much ? Should we really suppose one man (or one Manuela) would be able to fill same’s boots? Come on all you would-be Stoodlers, there must be many of you out there skilled with smoke and mirrors and able to turn any topic to demonstrate one’s own prowess.

Let’s be hearing from you.

The art of obfuscation must not be allowed to perish.

(Sepp Blatter – you need not apply. This is a job for wellmeaning amateurs, not seasoned professionals).
