THE Electoral Commission is currently in the throes of a boundary review for the seats that make up the county council.

This has a broader implication as the county ward boundaries are largely dictated by a combination of borough (and town) ward boundaries which as everyone knows in Andover are ‘rotten boroughs’ indeed with an outrageous gerrymander in place.

There is now a vast disparity in the number of voters between different wards.

For example, using the population info sheets on the TVBC website, there are supposedly the following populations in the CC wards.

Andover North 17,049 Andover South 15,498 Andover West 12,186 For those who don’t know, Andover North is made up of St Mary’s and Alamein wards, Andover south is made up of Winton and Millway wards and Andover West is made up of Harroway and the much smaller (by population) Penton Bellinger ward.

Ironically the residents of Burghclere Down, that feel themselves to be part of Andover, are not represented in any of the Andover wards.

As can be clearly seen there is a gross disparity in the number of voters between the wards.

Now this may suit some people but it is scarcely democratic.

Residents should make their voices heard in the upcoming review and demand fair boundaries based upon one man one vote.
