IN our phenomenally popular series... the Andover Advertiser is publishing a “thank you” column featuring messages sent in by readers.
Whether you would like to show gratitude to a loved one or a complete stranger, this is the place to do it. Send messages to mike.sims@ andoveradvertiser.co.uk.
THANK you to all the readers who responded to my letter on surnames and their origin.
Replies came, not just from Andover, but from Stockbridge, Whiteparish and two from Basingstoke, where the Advertiser is also on sale.
Some people asked about rare surnames that were not always their own.
Shakespeare could be the name of a medieval jouster and Fluen from the Welsh Llewyellyn.
Allwright could derive from a Germanic Christian name.
Secondly, I would like to congratulate Councillor Barbara Carpenter for raising parking and transport issues on Caesar Close and speeding issues on Roman Way.
She is genuinely community-minded and is always willing to stop and talk to people.
Richard J Kidd, Danegeld Close, Andover.
