I DESCRIBE each day being the Mayor of Test Valley as receiving a gift, just like having Christmas Day everyday.

I am lucky enough to meet businesses, community groups, charities, and members of the royal family as well as attend civic events and chair Test Valley Borough Council’s full council meetings.

I witness learning, connecting, sharing, supporting, and incredible visual work.

It is truly quite magical and a privilege to serve and represent you all as the First Citizen of our borough.

I am thankful to everyone across the borough and in other areas of Hampshire who make us feel welcome; teaching us, sharing stories and engaging us to be involved.

I have been humbled, shed tears and have had lots of fun.

The best part of any visit for me, is the opportunity to engage with all involved, understanding what drives people and what they need going forward to see if I can help in any way.

I want to thank all of you out there who work so hard for your community, there is an army of volunteers keeping the running of our community together.

Without you, we would be in a different place including those serving our country in the armed forces and front line services such as policemen, doctors, nurses, and firemen who will be working for us over the holiday period – stay safe.

For those of you not in a good place right now or missing a loved one, I hope you can find comfort in a friend or family member or a local service that can offer support.

I am aware this can be an incredibly difficult time of year for some – I will be thinking of you all.

I hope 2017 brings you all that you are looking for.

Have a wonderful festive time and I look forward to the new year.

Cllr Karen Hamilton, Mayor of Test Valley 2016/2017
