THE January meeting of Vernham Dean Parish Council was attended by Cllrs Michael Knight (vice chairman), Mary Perry, Haydn Watkins, Julie Drury, and Mark Doherty. Also in attendance was the clerk.

The following matters were discussed:

Website: It had been hoped that a demonstration of the new website would be available but unfortunately it was not. It is not completed yet and it appears necessary to employ someone to finish off the work started by volunteers. The clerk to contact the person who built the website for The George Inn public house to see if they are able to help.

Speed limit sign: The 30mph sign at the west end of Back Lane was due to be re-instated on 18 January.

Well cover: Mark Doherty had chased the landowner regarding the dangerous well cover opposite his property. He will continue to monitor and chase as necessary.

Dog fouling: It was uncertain as to whether dog fouling had been mentioned in the school newsletter. Church Path continues to be a problem area. It was pointed out that the playing field may benefit from more signs prohibiting dog walking on the field. The clerk to follow up with the Playing Fields Association.

Flooding taskforce: The flooding taskforce had met in December but there was nothing significant to report. Another meeting with Hampshire County Council is due to take place in February where it is hoped more action will be taken.

Grant for projector: A letter from Kit Malthouse MP had been received congratulating the clerk on securing a lottery grant for the new projector in the village hall. Mary Perry also extended thanks to the clerk for the same and she requested that as many people as possible come to the next film night on 18 January.

Mary Perry: She reported that the school choir had come and sung to the Xmas coffee club morning, and also that she still has some tickets left for the 100 Club. The vice chairman wished her a very happy 80th birthday on behalf of the council. Her recent village tea party had been a huge surprise to her and she thanked everyone. Mary also reported that she has been invited to a garden party with the Queen in recognition of her work in the community. Well done Mary!

Budget proposal: The clerk presented a proposed budget for the forthcoming financial year which was agreed. The precept for 2017/18 was agreed at £10,000 representing no increase over 2016/17.

Next meeting: 13 March at 7.30pm in the village hall.
