STOCKBRIDGE — RED CROSS

Wednesday saw the opening celebration of the Red Cross Hospital which Mrs.Herbert Johnson, at her own expense, opened with a tea, when about 60 or 70 sat down, the wounded soldiers and nurses from the Marsh Court Red Cross Hospital being present. After tea was over the Rev.Folkard moved a very hearty vote of thanks to Mrs.Johnson for her hospitality, also touching upon a very special request to the inhabitants of Stockbridge not to put any temptations in the way of the wounded soldiers when out for their walk, as it is not the wish of the donor of the hospital to place the town out of bounds.—The Rev.R.J.Chandler seconded the motion and spoke in a very touching but kind way of all concerned, mentioning Dr.Loveless, who is appointed doctor both for this and March Court hospital.—Dr.Loveless brought the speeches to a conclusion in his own humorous way.—The company then thoroughly inspected the whole of the hospital, and nothing but compliments could be heard on all sides for the very excellent manner in which everything was found. The hospital consists of 25 beds, 14 of which are expected to be occupied on Saturday. The Misses Meeking were very busy looking after the comfort of all who attended, finally handing cigarettes to the gentlemen present. The company then dispersed after a very enjoyable afternoon.

A mere MAN at the Kitchen Front Club.

“My wife often pops off for an hour or two to attend meetings of the Kitchen Front Club, and having a little time to spare one afternoon I thought I’d be bold enough to creep in and see for myself what goes on. After one or two surprised looks from the ladies present I was ignored and allowed to watch proceedings from the back.

The lady demonstrator was wonderful, I thought. She gave us hint after hint on how to make wartime food more appetising and all the while she was actually doing the practical work on an Electric cooker and producing dishes that made my mouth water.

I couldn’t help thinking that I was lucky to have a wife who attended meetings like this and realised how much of our successful catering at home under wartime conditions was due to the Kitchen Front Club.

I wondered, too, why more mere men didn’t encourage their wives to join the K.F.C. I am sure there would be more enjoyment (and less indigestion) if they did!”

HEADING FOR EUROPE

The ambitions of Roy Perry, Conservative leader of Test Valley Borough Council, lie in Europe, he revealed this week after fighting the Labour held Swansea West.

“My interest is very much the European Parliament and I will be looking towards Strasbourg in the future. My campaign in Wales was a useful experience,” he commented.
