THE first on duty UK military airman to die as a result of flying lived in Junction Road, Andover.

He was Staff Sergeant Richard Wilson.

The pilot who died about two hours later on July 5, 1912, was Capt Eustace Broke Loraine.

Sgt Wilson’s funeral cortege left Junction Road, turned right into Charlton Road, round The Folly and up Marlborough Street to St Mary’s Church.

His grave/memorial is easy to find.

Looking at the church as if from the war memorial, take the little path on the right hand side and it is on the left about 100 yards ahead.

The airman’s cross monument from the crash site is now at Stonehenge Visitors’ Centre.
