SO, THE ink would hardly have dried in the council minute book before the contractors were removing the George Yard toilets!
I came to Andover in 1968 and between then and 1974 I found that the Andover borough councillors treated seriously their duty, as elected representatives, to care for the town and its residents. I am sure that they would not have not approved a proposal then to remove the toilets because they would have known of their importance to their public. It seems that the same protection is not given by our present Andover wards’ councillors.
The present arrangement of queueing in shops to use their toilets is fraught with a whole series of problems which will soon lead to its end. What then? The council must look urgently for a properly thought through solution.
One idea may be to resurrect the stand-alone toilets provided in the late 70s/early 80s, known colloquially as the ‘Super Loos’. Entry was gained automatically by a small charge for a limited time to prevent their use for improper purposes. Between each use there was an automatic cleansing cycle.
