WITH regard to the article about the donation of medals to The Winchester War Museum (Advertiser, 23 March) relating to Sergeant Hubert Lawrence from the Royal Hampshire Regiment, who died in Africa in 1948, aged 35.
It may be of interest to know that there are four surviving daughters: Dorothy who now resides in Southampton; Valerie in Andover; Jennifer in Northampton and myself in Hertfordshire.
The much valued photo of the gravestone (which can be viewed on www.andoveradvertiser.co.uk by searching for Hubert Lawrence) was obtained when Dorothy’s late husband, who was a cabin service officer for BOAC (British Overseas Airwaves Corporation), while in Lagos, Nigeria, visited the Yaba Military Cemetery, where Sergeant Lawrence was buried with full colours.
Sadly, his wife Hannah died in 1999 at the age of 84.
Averil Trubridge, Hemel Hempstead.
