IF ANYONE is considering visiting the Stockbridge Marsh to admire the wonderful river view or to let their children or dogs cool off with a paddle, then think again.
The National Trust (NT) have erected a barb wire topped fence along 98 per cent of the bank.
This not only looks appalling but also denies locals and visitors the pleasure of activities enjoyed by thousands over many, many years.
The river is only accessible for a very small part of its course except for the privileged few who have fishing rights. To lose this section would be iniquitous.
It is difficult to reconcile this latest eyesore with the recent pronouncement by the NT’s new boss stating that she wanted NT sites to become more dog friendly.
With a government initiative in place to get more adults and children to enjoy the outdoors more this recent action must be seen as a pure contradiction.
If you feel that this action by the NT Is wrong I implore you to make your representation to: National Trust Head Office, Heelis Building, Kemble Drive, Swindon SN2 2NA.
Tony and Anne Collingswood, Admirals Row, Stockbridge
