Tetra Paks can be recycled in Andover

I WRITE in response to the resident’s letter ‘Frustration over town recycling system’, 12 June, complaining that cartons, such as those produced by Tetra Pak, cannot readily be recycled.

I want to reassure Andover residents that they can easily recycle their liquid food and drink cartons at three collection points in the area.Just two years ago there were very few carton recycling facilities in the UK compared with the rest of Europe.

However - following significant investments from the carton industry via ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) - cartons can now be recycled in over 86 per cent of local authorities in the UK.There are three such carton bring banks at sites around Andover, and residents can use our interactive map on www.tetrapakrecycling,co.uk to find their nearest one.

Whilst at present cartons can still not be recycled through kerbside collections in Andover, one in six councils elsewhere are now collecting cartons at kerbside, and we are continuing to work with councils to expand this further.Cartons can be recycled into a variety of new paper-based products, including plasterboard liner, envelopes, paper carrier bags, roof tiles and even garden furniture, and you don't even have to remove the straws or tops off the cartons to recycle them.

I would urge all keen recyclers in Andover to squash their cartons before recycling so we can fit more in the bins and reduce the number of trucks on the road.Anyone who would like to find more information about carton recycling in the area can visit www.tetrapakrecycling,co.uk Fay Dashper, Recycling Operations Manager, Tetra Pak Ltd.

The Tetra Pak scheme covers the following sites in Andover: * Tesco, River Way, * The Entertainer Public House Car Park, King Arthur’s Way * George Yard Car Park, off Eastern Avenue.
