It came as a bit of a shock to a number of people when a certain Andover website ‘revealed’ that the annual fireworks display was cancelled.
That included some of the people who have been involved in organising the event for many years.
Fortunately the fact of the matter is that the Rotary Club of Andover has come to a very reluctant decision that they are unable to continue as partners in the event after some eight or nine extremely successful years.
This is a shame as the club has demonstrated its usual determination and skill in helping to achieve a top quality community event together with the Andover Round Table.
But the Round Table members are equally determined that the show will go on and have already been sounding out potential partners to ensure the 2009 fireworks display will be a memorable one.
As with all these community events organised by our voluntary organisations they need to be supported physically and financially.
The Andover Carnival was resurrected by a small band of enthusiastic, public spirited people who gave huge amounts of their time and energy to bring some fun and laughter back to our streets and they should be congratulated and thanked for all they have achieved.
It is easy for sections of the public to criticise events which they regard as less than perfect but if the community, including the commercial and industrial sectors, were to become more actively involved it could take all these events to a new level.
There is no denying that Andover has started to gel as a real community over the past couple of years.
We just need more people to help spread the organisational and financial burdens of these events and we will all be the winners as a result.
