There’s no denying that to keep taking Andover forward can be an uphill struggle, although it’s usually worth the effort.

But despite the efforts, invariably voluntary, of the most public spirited groups there are times when there’s no option but to pull the plug on an event.

It’s happened twice to the carnival and now it has happened to the town’s main fireworks display.

There had been a rumour some months ago that the display had been cancelled - that turned out to be inaccurate speculation following the decision by Andover Rotary Club that they were unable to continue to support the event which had been run jointly by them and the Andover Round Table at Thruxton Circuit.

Round Table members were determined to go ahead with the event but wanted to bring it back into the town and it had looked as though it would all fall into place as negotiations progressed to secure a suitable venue.

When this fell through a number of other locations were investigated but when the final option failed the Tablers decided they had no choice but to call it all off.

It is certain that there will be howls of outrage from some corners of the town and many will decry the cancellation as letting the town and its entire community down.

There were similar cries when the carnival was cancelled but it was only thanks to the dedication of a very small band of dedicated volunteers that this was ever resuscitated.

Round Tablers are now hoping to produce the best display seen in the town for 2010, hopefully with support from the Anton Rotary Club who joined forces with them latterly this year.

We may all be disappointed but let’s remember that these guys try to do all this for no financial gain and in their own time, for us and local charities.
