CONTENT South Wilts skipper Tom Morton believes his cricketers have more in the tank as they tackle a double-header this weekend.

His unbeaten table-toppers look to make it five wins on the trot in ECB Premier Division when they visit Havant at 1pm.

Victory would see them pull further away from second-placed Havant, who they are seven points clear of at the summit.

But Morton is not underestimating what the hosts have to offer. “The start has been OK okay. We could have played better in certain areas I’m not particularly happy with, but the wins’ column is looking good so we must be doing something right,” he said.

“We gathered some early momentum in the season with good wins in the pre-season matches. This has carried through into the early season form. We must peak at the right points though, and I think our best is yet to come.

“Clearly this Saturday is a big game.Havant have a very strong side and a team which particularly suits home advantage. We’ve done well to win there the last few seasons and if we play to our potential we are capable of doing so again. Luke Evans is off Hampshire Academy duty so the bowling stocks will be bolstered. However, Steve Riddle is unavailable.”

Twenty-fours later, the Lower Bemerton three-time champions welcome Ventnor for a place in the regional final of the ECB’s Royal London national club championship at 1pm, a fortnight after beating them.

Morton, whose side have also seen-off Hampshire Academy, Lymington and St Cross Symondians, is hoping for much of the same.

He added: “Sunday is also a big day for the club, a good cup run can be so influential overall. It will be an opportunity for some of the young second team cricketers to impress and another quality fixture for the first team. Playing two days running isn’t particularly unusual for the lads, many having played for Wiltshire minor counties team on Sundays while others have university and representative cricket during the week. It should be a good day at the club, any support will be greatly appreciated.”
