POLICE are calling attention to the number of small fires that have recently been lit in woodlands, parks and other areas, after two incidents in Overton.
Jackson’s Copse recently had a small fire, and the Berrydown Sports Grounds, both in Overton, were damaged by fire.
Last night (July 28) at the Sports Grounds, there was a fire that was lit under the cricket covers, which damaged the ground. The fire was put out.
Hampshire Constabulary issued this advice: “Unless you are the land owner or have the land owner’s permission, you cannot light a fire. Criminal Damage by arson is an offence. The Criminal Damage Act states that criminal damage caused by a fire will be treated as arson.
“Furthermore, given the recent spell of hot dry weather, the risks and dangers to those individuals involved is very high. Please exercise common sense and only light fires in places where you have permission.
“In addition to the fires, there is a large amount of litter being left including glass and cans. Please clean up after yourselves. Many places have bins, use them."
