A CENTURY’S worth of town history was on display at the parish hall on Saturday.

Whitchurch History Society showcased its archival material to more than 180 interested visitors to the exhibition named Whitchurch Through the Century 1918-2018.

Census, burial records and photo albums attracted history lovers and town residents alike who were able to see the change in Whitchurch, their own homes and streets from the society’s collection.

Whitchurch History Society chairman John Marriner said: “It went very well, as we hoped it would, it was a success.

“Some people stayed a long time and we got some very, very good feedback in our comments book, we were delighted.”

The society spent three months collating the event, which it aims to do for anniversaries in the town.

Its last exhibition focused on the history society’s own 30-year anniversary, and the members are finding more and more donations from town residents who are helping to build up the group’s collections.

Mr Marriner added: “We want people out in the town to be aware of the archive material that we hold, it would be senseless to have it stored away in a room all the time.

“As people become aware of our existence, we are getting things from other people for example a parent or grandparent might die and might have old photos of Whitchurch,” John added.

“We get quite a few donations of that sort, and gradually we are accumulating an incredible amount of material.”

The society will now look at upcoming anniversaries to use for its next exhibition theme.

It is also hosting a historical talk about old Andover on September 4. To contact the society email whitchurchhistorysociety@gmail.com.
