A BASINGSTOKE pair are looking to continue to raise money for charity in memory of their niece who died in 2016, aged just five-years-old.

Anne Sheehan and Martin Whitman will be running a quiz night in their latest attempt to raise funds for Naomi House and Jacksplace.

Martin has already been completing various feats of athletic achievement, despite starting the year with little in the way of training.

The pair chose to support Naomi House after the work the charity did when it helped their niece, Keira Elmer, who died at the hospice aged just five-years-old after being diagnosed with Alpers-Huttenlocher Syndrome the previous year.

Martin said: “They really are a brilliant charity, and they were always there for us when we needed them. They are amazing, and were there for us right until the end and support afterwards.”

This is not the first fundraising effort the Martin has done in 2018, kicking off the year with a 54-mile cycle ride, and he has been busy ramping up the distances since. He’s also completed the Basingstoke 10km run, and the Naomi House May Day triathlon.

The last event before this was the Basingstoke Big Wheel, which was special as it was completed with his sons Alex, Zack and Kyle, along with niece Chloe and his father.

Martin added: “I’ve done fairly well so far, I’ve got better as we’ve gone along. I think that I’ve done well for a non-professional.”

Anne said: “We’ve had a great reaction so far. The Irish Centre letting us use their premises, businesses donating prizes for us to use, and we’re hoping that more people come along on the day.

“Martin has been busy this year, with one event after another, and it’s been a massive challenge, especially the early starts!”

The quiz night, along with raffle and bake sale, will be taking place at the the Irish Centre in Council Road on Saturday getting underway at 7.30pm.
