A TEENAGED team of students from Odiham will be going to the races in Singapore next week as a part of the F1 in Schools scheme.

The team of four Robert May’s School pupils will taking on the best the planet has to offer at the F1 in Schools World Finals 2018 from September 9 to 12.

The F1 in Schools World Finals 2018 will feature the top 50 teams from 22 countries, with Origin, the team from the West Street school, putting to the test their bespoke designed F1 in Schools race car.

The team has had to design and create their own Formula 1 car in miniature, which is powered by a compressed air cylinder.

They then have to provide a pit display, their cars and a written portfolio, and give a presentation to the judges.

There will be a panel of 45 judges from the worlds of Formula 1, education and industry assessing the entry’s work.

After presenting to the judges. the team has to race its car on the F1 in Schools track with the cars covering the 20 metre track in a time of around one second.

The team have put in thousands of hours of work to be ready for the ultimate challenge of pitting their car against the best from across the globe.

The Origins team is made up of Yaren Chakmek, 16, James Dorward, 15, Rosie Dolan, 15, and Ted Hodgson, 14.

Team manager Rosie said: “We’re returning to the World Finals for a second attempt at taking the world champions crown, after finishing fifth last year.

“As the World Finals approaches, we are looking forward to the opportunities it will bring.

“Visiting Singapore is a first for everyone on the team so we are excited for the culture and meeting all the people and teams at the World Finals.

“We have been inspired by the challenge to pursue a STEM career particularly in the engineering field.”

Andrew Deford, founder of the F1 in Schools competition, said: “The World Finals is the pinnacle of F1 in Schools and is the goal for many of the students who compete.

“I have no doubt that all the students will have worked extremely hard to present highly professional F1 in Schools teams and showcase their skills to the world.

“It will be a fantastic event and I wish all the students a safe trip to Singapore.”
