AFTER several weeks of concern and a number of operations thousands of miles away to treat his brain tumours, a man from Basingstoke is back in England.

George Gannon, 29 and originally from Old Basing, was diagnosed as having several brain tumours in Thailand at the end of September.

He has since had treatment for the largest of the tumours, but had to be operated on further as several smaller tumours were discovered.

His family issued an impassioned plea for donations to help get him back home, and fly out his mother, Sarah Evison, and brother out to join him.

George was given a fit to fly certificate on Tuesday last week, and travelled back to the UK with his girlfriend Natalie Grace on Thursday.

Mrs Evison wrote on the fundraising page: “Both he and Natalie are back on British soil after flying home last week and they seem to have settled into their room at our home.

“George has now registered at a local GP and yesterday he was fast tracked to the hospital for blood tests.

“Today [Tuesday 16] he will have an urgent MRI scan as one was not carried out in Thailand, before the neurosurgeon and his team at North Staffs hospital in Stoke decide on the treatment he will need to undertake.

“At this time we are unsure what this treatment will entail but with love and continued support we know we will beat this.

“Again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for your kind words, messages of support and of course your donations which without, it would not have been possible to get George home.”

George has now settled back in his mother’s home in the West Midlands, and will be there as his treatment continues.

The family set up a fundraising page to get George back home, and help pay for the costs of getting the family there and back again.

This also helped to pay for the business class seat that George had to have as he was required to lie down on the way back.

People from across the globe responded to the call to arms, with £13,500 of the £25,000 target being raised in the first two days, and the total now in excess of £22,000. As well as locals who know George, many people from Thailand also donated to help bring the total up.

They are still hoping to continue to raise money to pay for costs.

George had moved out to Koh Phangan in Thailand with his girlfriend Natalie Grace two years ago.

There, they started their own business helping the islanders with their social media and websites, and George took up DJing, as well as running several environmental conservation campaigns for locals.
