MORE than 100 people from Get Wiltshire Walking groups across the county joined together at Ludgershall for a walk through the countryside, taking in historic sites.

The walk set off from the Queen’s Head, Ludgershall, on one of three circular routes tailored for 'starters', 'strollers' or 'striders'.

Wiltshire Council supports 18 groups across the county as part of its bid to encourage more people to get some exercise and fresh air, aided by 185 volunteers.

Councillor Chris Williams, the council’s portfolio holder for communities, said: “It was a great chance for people to enjoy a part of our beautiful county they might not have explored before.

“There couldn’t be a better way to spend a gorgeous autumn day than by enjoying a healthy walk in the great outdoors.

“Our volunteers generously give up their own time to come out and test the proposed routes and ensure they are suitable for the levels of walkers we are expecting.

“These events simply would not happen if we did not have such a great team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers.”

The routes took in the site of Ludgershall Castle and followed quiet byways and tracks into Collingbourne Wood before returning to the pub, where many participants rewarded themselves with lunch.

Cllr Williams added: “There was a great social gathering at the end of the walks and time for walkers from different groups and different areas of the county to get together and exchange news and views.”
