WORLD Judo Day saw 10 fighters from Andover take on competitors from across the south of England.

Scorpion Judo Club, based at Augusta Park Community Centre, took eight juniors and two adults to the Hampshire Open Judo Championship on October 28.

Among the success was the girls taking home gold for the group in the under 42kg category and over 70kg category, as well as a silver medal for the under 57kg.

Boys also won bronze in an under 30kg category.

The coaches said: “We had the two smallest judoka on the day fighting who both fought amazingly well, coming away with a bronze and silver medal in the girls under 29kg group.

“We had Alex and Dom fighting in the adults, both fighters are at the beginning of their judo journey and for Dom it was his first ever competition, winning a bronze.

“This being an open event there were a lot of black belts fighting, both fought hard despite their lack of experience and low grade, they got stuck in and done themselves and the club proud.”
