MORE than 10,000 are being planted to remember the Wiltshire soldiers who gave their lives in the First World War.
Ludgershall lost 37 soldiers during the First World War, and thanks to the donation of The Woodland Trust, 37 trees are to be planted in and around the area over the coming months.
Each tree is to be dedicated to a lost soldier with a commemorative plaque being placed once the trees are established.
On Thursday, November 15 at Ludgershall Town Cemetery the first of these trees was planted. The youngest serving member of 26 Engineer Regiment, Sapper Sunny Smith, dug the soil and assisting him with the planting was Guy Taylor, grandson of fallen soldier Serjeant Willie Taylor who was formerly the Ludgershall Police Constable between 1911 and 1914.
Other members of Ludgershall Town Council and a representative from Lovell Construction attended the event and the remaining trees will be planted either in the Ludgershall Town Cemetery or around the Community Building on the old Corunna Barracks site over the coming months.
