AN ANNUAL 30-year-old walking event across Salisbury Plain will not be taken into 2019.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust's Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon went ahead for the last time this year, as "rising costs and logistical challenges" have caused the event to cease.

Every spring the route invited walkers and runners to explore the nature scenes in and around Salisbury to raise money for the charity, either as a full or half marathon, a bike route, dog walk or fun run.

Around 1,500 people took part in the event this year, with the range of trails covering sites including Salisbury Plain, Pewsey Downs and Vale, Avebury Stone Circle and Stonehenge.

A statement from the Wiltshire Wildlife team said it is with a "heavy heart" the trust has come to this decision, adding: "To honour the legacy of the event, we hope to offer a number of new personal challenge events from next year, to give participants access to some of the wonderful natural and man-made heritage which Wiltshire has to offer.

"We would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers and participants that have joined us in taking part in Sarsen over the past 30 years."

Future events and challenges will be announced on the Wiltshire Wildlife website.
