AN EVENT launched last year to show support for the Armed Forces has been postponed.

Tidworth Armed Forces Day was due to take place in June but last week organisers announced that this year’s event might not take place, citing a lack of suitable space.

Last year the day was hosted at the sports field in St Andrews Road, but roadworks taking place in the town is making access difficult.

In a post on Facebook last Wednesday Tracy Jones, committee secretary, said: “It is with great regret and sadness that tonight the decision to postpone this year’s Tidworth Armed Forces Day event in June was made.

“We have exhausted every avenue in our search for an area suitable for the event, with all the work that is taking place in Tidworth and the surrounding areas we found this task impossible.

“We will be sending out emails to all those who expressed in an interest in the event and apologise for any inconvenience that postponing the event causes.”

The news has been met with disappointment by those living in the town and offers of suggestions of other locations.

But Tidworth mayor Councillor Mark Connolly has expressed that a number of sites were looked at but were not feasible.

Cllr Connolly added on a social media message: “We would prefer to postpone for a year than go backwards and have a much smaller event.”

Last year organisers said that funds were already in place to run the event again, with hopes to expand on its success, making the celebration even larger.

Ms Jones told the Advertiser: “We literally spent the last two months trying to find another location, from farmers fields to local schools. We are absolutely devastated.”

She added that the event is yet to be called off entirely and hopes that an area can be found.

One of the problems the committee is facing is the display of a children’s motorcycle team which could rip up grass.
