YORK rail passengers faced huge delays on the East Coast Mainline last night following a fatality on the tracks.
Trains heading from London to York were halted for more than two hours at Newark after a person was hit by a train at Retford.
One passenger, travelling to York on LNER's 8pm train from Kings Cross, said it was meant to arrive in York at about 9.50pm but did not get in until midnight.
"It was frustrating but people were pretty patient and philosophical about it," he said.
LNER, which will give passengers a full refund of their fares because of the delays, tweeted its apologies to everyone whose journeys had been affected, adding: "We appreciate your patience whilst the emergency services attend."
