A NEW cafe and community space could be created in the pavilion in Hull Road Park.

Cllr Hilary Shepherd is inviting residents to have their say on the plans, which she says could see an under-used building turned into a much-needed centre for people to socialise and host events.

Initial plans include refurbishing and extending the existing pavilion to create a cafe with a terrace, a function, drop-in library, function room and a Changing Places accessible toilet.

She said the project would cost about £450,000 and, if everything goes to plan, could be completed by next spring.

Cllr Shepherd said: “This is so needed.

"I have talked to people in the ward and they are so excited, it’s crying out to be redeveloped because it’s not used at the moment.

“I’m really excited about this project.

"This is aimed at the residents and could help alleviate social isolation.

“I’m told the development could take a year and cost about £450,000.

“I do feel there are so many people looking for a place like this.

"I’m confident saying it would be a success.”

Choose2Youth, a non-profit organisation working with children, young people and adults who have disabilities or additional needs, currently runs a cafe in temporary cabins that have been installed on the old bowling green on Alcuin Avenue, off Hull Road.

The group’s young people run the cafe to build their work and life skills.

Cllr Shepherd said the project has been a big success and she hopes the organisation could also run the new cafe.

The plans also include a garden of tranquility within the grounds of the park and a small parking area for visitors.

And the function room could be used for NHS social prescribing activities, classes, events and community groups.
