A NEW Aldi supermarket is set to be built near Bolton town centre.

The German giant is due to set up shop on the corner of Manchester Road and Raikes Lane.

It has had planning permission to build the food store and car park since December 2016.

Now, a planning application to put up signs for the new store has been submitted to Bolton Council.

This comes as the discount supermarket chain opened a new store in Westhoughton on Thursday.

It was granted planning consent to build on the site of the former Glebe Mill off Bolton Road six months before the Manchester Road site was also approved.

Olympic bronze gymnast Kristian Thomas was at the grand opening in Westhoughton this week.

The first 30 customers received a free bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

There are already two Aldi stores on the edge of the town centre, in Trinity Street and Higher Bridge Street.

There are also stores in Breightmet, Horwich and Over Hulton.

Aldi also has a distribution centre in Logistics North, the industrial estate in Over Hulton.

According to the decision notice issued in December 2016, development on the site must begin within three years from the date that permission was granted.

Planning officers will decide the outcome of this latest application for internally illuminated signs.
