IT WAS a day of celebration in Whitchurch on Saturday as the town staged its annual community awards day.

The awards were handed out after a community day event during the afternoon, where more than 20 groups filled the Gill Nethercott Centre to showcase information on what they do.

The Annual Town Assembly, the town council’s official report to the community, was then presented before the community awards were handed out by town mayor Councillor John Buckley.

Seven winners received certificates in recognition of their contribution to the community.

Their names had been put forward by members of the public who had to say why their nominees deserved the awards. The list of winners is as follows:

n Kirsty Francis – for her work at the Youth Club and Youth Project.

n Gillian Clarke – for her work with the Parish Hall, Silver Threads, and the County Market.

n Alan Phillips – for his work with the Friday Lunch Club based at Testbourne School.

n Brian Bent – for his role within the walking community, Whitchurch Association and the Whitchurch Silk Mill.

n Martyn Dancer – for his work with Whitchurch Cricket Club.

n Amanda Winch and Mark Bishop – for their work in trying to protect the Red House pub, in London Street, from permanent closure.
