SAFETY was at the top of the agenda when more than 100 youngsters gathered with one aim.

Andover Beaver Scouts met on March 2 at the 12th Andover Scout headquarters for an activity day in the hope of achieving their safety badge.

During the day the youngsters learnt about water safety and tried their hand at a water rescue by using rope and tossing a buoy.

Safety at home was also looked at with the youngsters told how to keep safe around potentially dangerous household items like boiling water, hot irons, and cookers.

On hand to also help was the fire service, which showed groups around a fire engine and taught road safety with a pop-up crossing.

Network Rail pointed out the dangers of straying onto railway tracks and good practice to use at stations, while Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance staff told youngsters about the service it provides.

Richard Hennen, assistant district commissioner, said: “The afternoon ended with the air ambulance mascot Pat the Paramedic making an appearance to say hello to everybody.

“The children went home having all achieved their safety badge, along with sticker books and goodies kindly provided by Network Rail.

“A grateful thanks is due to all involved.”
