A MAJOR event in Andover’s calendar has announced the two charities it will support this year.

Andover Carnival has announced that proceeds of the event, on July 21, will help Valley Leisure’s I Can Therapy Centre team and Andover Young Carers (AYC).

Following a competitive application process, the I Can Therapy Centre was chosen as a “worthy beneficiary”.

The centre is a bespoke clinically-led, community-based, specially-adapted exercise facility based within the Salto Centre, in Charlton Road.

The site’s team, coupled with specialist exercise equipment, enables those who may be older, inactive, de-conditioned, disabled or limited due to long-term health conditions to exercise safely and effectively.

Liz Murray, community health development manager for Valley Leisure, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the 2019 Andover Carnival.

“We’ve been open for nearly 18 months and have welcomed over 450 users into the centre.

“Due to demand we are looking to extend the facility and enhance the specialist exercise facilities available.”

“Funding generated through the Andover Carnival will enable us to further improve the facility including increasing floor space for complimentary exercise and improving access to the centre through the provision of additional disabled parking and automatic entry doors.”

Also set to benefit is AYC which has been raising awareness, providing support and advocating on behalf of the young carers of Andover, and surrounding villages, since 2000.

Through their work with local schools identifying potential young carers, engagement with statutory agencies and other local charities regarding support, and running groups both at their bungalow and off site, the charity’s team works to ensure that the needs of young carers are recognised and met.

The organisation said: “AYC is an established local charity supporting local young carers. Your support through volunteering and fundraising, makes a very real difference to the lives of these amazing children. “
