STAFF at a town centre pub are battling to raise money to earn a spot in a Spartan chariot charity race.

The Redbridge, in High Street, is one of 114 venues in Stonegate Pub Company’s southern region competing to raise the most money for Cancer Research UK.

The pubs that raise the most will then earn a place on one of eight cycle chariots, each of which have 12 spots, for a charity race to be held in London on June 20.

Colin Hawkins, Operations Director at Stonegate Pub Company, said: “We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way in our lives, so we wanted to do our bit to raise money to help stamp out this awful disease.

“The pub teams and their customers are all behind this and together we intend to raise a big chunk for the cause, so let’s all support them and start donating.”

Those that do win a place on a chariot will pedal around central and east London for five miles in full Spartan dress.

The Redbridge has already raised almost £750 for the cause.
