HUNDREDS of people braved the rain clouds and flocked to Wherwell for the village’s annual fete.

The day not only offered fun for all the family, but raised £6,000 for the St Peter and Holy Cross Church in the village.

Running along Church Street, the traditional affair on Saturday was opened by Rev’d Jax Machin, welcoming young and old guests alike along.

A games area was enjoyed by children, with a host of activities for the youngsters to enjoy.

Anna Lipa, who organises the occasion along with Susanne Hasselmann, said: “The children were flinging themselves about with gay abandon and people were enjoying themselves.”

Traditional stalls also drew attention from the crowds, with a tombola, bric-a-brac, a raffle and plant and produce stalls, along with a Pimm’s tent and barbecue.

The forever popular cake stall made its return, with taste treats for fete-goers to delight in.

Prizes were also given out by Rev’d Machin at the end of the day.

Despite the grey weather Anna said that people still came out to take part, adding: “People were being very British and enjoying themselves.

“It is always very enjoyable, the village turns out to help and we have visitors from Andover and the surrounding villages, one or two people from around the county and some people from Southampton.”

For children and big kids alike there was also an air rifle range and a loo shoot game, which returned for another year and proved popular.

The thousands of pounds raised from the fete will help with the ongoing running and maintenance costs of St Peter and Holy Cross Church.
