A NEWLY-ordained deacon will take up his role as a curate at St Mary’s Church, Andover, following an ordination ceremony in Winchester.

Ten men and women were ordained at Winchester Cathedral by the Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Tim Dakin, on Sunday.

The youngest of the ten, 25-year-old Sam Scott, has been named the new curate for St Mary’s Church, a role which will see him act as an assistant to the vicar.

He and his fellow deacons were ordained after two to three years of training and will typically be ordained as priests following another year of service.

Sam was previously a youth worker at St Thomas’ Church, in Fair Oak, Eastleigh, and said it was an accumulation of moments that inspired him to join the clergy.

He added: “I’m passionate about the opportunity we have to join in the work of God sharing the love, hope, forgiveness and peace that he offers us and our communities.”
