COMMUNITY spirit and competitive nature filled Andover on Sunday as two events returned for their second outing.

Andover Cycling Festival saw keen bikers and families come together to enjoy a day of pedal power, which covered not only the town centre, but as far as Oxfordshire.

More than 550 cyclists took part in the day which catered for mixed ages and abilities with three rides making up the affair - sportive, racers and family.

Halo Sports organised the event, with sponsorship from Hampshire County Council, Andover Vision and Simplyhealth.

Speaking about the day, organiser Harry Lodge said: “It was quite an exciting day especially the elite race and women’s race - I think people enjoyed.”

Harry added that there was “a very happy atmosphere at the family ride,” with over 200 people taking part and all receiving a medal.

There was also displays from Andover BMX, Andover Triathlon Club and Andover Wheelers.

For those who wanted a more relaxed day the mayor’s picnic returned to Vigo Recreation Ground, organised by Andover Rotary Club.

More than 1,000 people set up their blankets, chair and toasted with tea.

Young and old delighted in the free bouncy castle, games and refreshments from Andover Churches Together, while enjoying a variety of performances from Mencap’s Drama Group, Andover Musical Theatre and Test Valley Brass, to name a few who entertained the crowd.

Chris Lynn, one of the event’s organisers, said: “It was a really nice atmosphere. Everybody said it was great to have something free, it was really good to put something back in the town.”

Town charities and organisations also showcased their offerings.
