LOCALS will be able to experience all the fun of the fair in the city centre next month with the return of the Salisbury Charter Fair – which was first held in 1227.

Taking place from October 20, the annual three day event will be taking over Market Place and Guildhall Square with a variety of traditional and modern rides, stalls and attractions.

Almost 800 years ago – seven years after the building of Salisbury Cathedral began, King Henry III granted a Charter to the Bishop of Salisbury to hold a fair on the third Monday in October.

A spokesperson for the city council said: "The Charter Fair will bring plenty of fun for all the family with fair favourites including the carousel, dodgems and waltzer as well as other exciting rides for the thrill seekers."

The Fair will open from 4pm until 9pm on Sunday, and then 11am until 10pm Monday through to Wednesday.
