A CAR smashed through the front of a cottage near Andover last night after the driver seemingly lost control in the rain.

The incident took place just after 11pm on the stretch of road linking Clanville to Tangley.

No injuries were reported but the car’s wheel ended up in a nearby hedge and there is “a gaping big hole” in the front of one of the cottages.

Richard Waterman, parish clerk at Penton Grafton Parish Council, was notified of the incident as the cottages are owned by the authority. He went to the scene late last night to assess the damage.

“Our tenants were in the front room watching tele, and luckily no one was hurt,” he said.

“The driver and the passenger weren’t hurt, and the residents weren’t hurt.”

Richard has spoken with the police at length and says no one will be prosecuted following the incident. It is believed the incident was simply an accident caused by the bad weather, which Richard says made it a “nightmare” to drive in.

He said: “It happened when we had that major downpour last night and it sort of aquaplaned and took out part of the hedge.

“There’s a small bank and it must have lunched itself and it’s hit the front doors of the cottage.”

He added: “The car has rebounded, it’s sort of hit the cottage and bounced off and did a complete turnaround so it’s facing the way it came from.

"The wheel is off, it’s in the hedge.”

The cottages are located just outside the 30mph zone in Clanville, meaning cars are free to drive at the national speed limit through the area.

Richard says there will be “security” at the property this evening, given that there’s a large hole in the front of one of the cottages.

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for a statement on the incident.
