A woman is appealing for the help of the public to find her grandfather's beloved dog after it escaped following a car accident this morning.

Libs Matthews said her grandparent was involved in a crash on the A34 near Tot Hill services, north of Burghclere, when Gretel the nine-year-old Labrador ran free.

Speaking to the Gazette, Libs said her grandfather was on his way home to Wiltshire after staying with her family over Christmas.

She said: "My grandad had an accident on the A34 this morning around Tot Hill services. He is fine but his black lab jumped out of the car and ran off.

Libs continued: "She was seen running down the A34 and then has been seen since around the Highclere estate this afternoon.

"She is pretty much the only thing keeping my grandad alive so if anyone has any info or can get hold of her I would be hugely grateful.

"She is very scared, shy and she is quick on foot."

Sharing the appeal to Facebook, it has already been reposted more than 1,000 times as residents across Hampshire, Berkshire and beyond have spread the word.

Libs warned that Gretal is very 'shy' and asks that anyone who sees Gretal first contacts the family before approaching her.

She told the Gazette: "Gretal is very shy so email me if anyone sees her as they won’t be able to get close to her."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the family via email: olivia.matthews01@gmail.com.
