A POLICE dog and two officers were attacked by a man with a catapult on Saturday morning after a police chase across Wiltshire which led to two arrests.

Officers, with the help of a police helicopter, had been tracking a man and a woman in a stolen vehicle, which had travelled from the south of the county before eventually stopping in Amesbury.

The pair then fled on foot but as officers stopped the woman, the man fired a catapult, injuring two police officers and striking police dog Elvis.

Police say that both the officers and Elvis were not seriously hurt in the incident and have since returned to duty.

The man who fired the catapult was eventually stopped and he and the woman who had been in the car were arrested.

The woman was released under investigation; the man remains in custody.

Officers say they had been alerted by police in Dorset that a stolen Land Rover Discovery was heading into Wiltshire yesterday morning.

It entered the south of the county at around 10am and police gave chase, with a helicopter also scrambled.

Shortly afterwards, the vehicle came to a halt on Stonehenge Road, Amesbury, and a man and a woman got out and fled.

The woman was stopped almost immediately, but the man’s ensuing catapult attack left two officers injured – one struck in the head and the other in the chest.

Police dog Elvis was also hit by the catapult before helping officers to stop the man. A taser was used in the incident to prevent the man getting away.

A 21-year-old woman from the Salisbury area was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and taking it without consent.
