HUNDREDS of homes have been left without power in Whitchurch this afternoon.

Just after 4pm, households across Whitchurch and rural villages towards Andover suffered a power cut.

The editor of Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser, Katie French, was one of those affected by the power cut.

She posted on Twitter: "Hundreds of homes have just lost power in Whitchurch, Hampshire. Up to 50 postcodes affected. No known cause yet."

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said 50 known postcodes were affected and they expect the power to be switched back on by 7pm.

A spokesman said: “We’re sorry for the loss of supply. We currently have a fault affecting the areas listed. Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as they can.

"If you need more information, please call us on 105 or send us a message on Facebook or Twitter (@ssencommunity) and quote reference 'GG4326'.”

The Gazette has contacted SSEN for comment.
