THIS was the scene outside Wetherspoons this morning, and it was similarly relaxed into the early hours of this evening.

Amid concerns the town centre could be busy on Saturday night – 67 per cent of respondents in an online poll thought as much – a quick stroll through Bridge Street and the high street this evening showed a fairly sedate scene.

There were no queues outside the likes of the John Russell Fox, the Redbridge or the White Hart Hotel – despite markings on the pavement, just in case – as patrons enjoyed their first night on the town in more than three months.

It comes after many pubs in and around the town reported a ‘steady’ start to life after lockdown, with customers generally following the rules and adapting well to the new normal.
